Clapham Common

Matthew Giles Architects reimagined this 1860s villa-like home with a contemporary approach that honours its historic roots. Situated within the Clapham Park & Northbourne Road Conservation Area, the four-story, semi-detached house underwent a remarkable transformation that thoughtfully blends modern design with the area's rich Victorian heritage. The design team embraced the local vernacular by incorporating yellow London stock brick, stucco mouldings, timber sash windows, and natural slate roofs, ensuring a cohesive and sympathetic response to its surroundings.

Key to the home's renewal was the removal of an existing rear addition, making way for a striking single-story infill extension. This new space now hosts a spacious, light-filled dining area adjacent to the existing seating area, alongside a new den, an improved lower ground floor layout, and a stronger connection to the garden.

At the rear of the house, four brick piers establish a sense of permanence and harmony with the original structure. These piers, along with the exposed brickwork that runs seamlessly between the interior and exterior, create a visual continuity that is only interrupted by the sleek Crittall-style glazing and powder-coated aluminium doors. This thoughtful design fosters a fluid connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, blending the past with the present in a way that is both timeless and contemporary.
